Ben Anderson explores Africa’s west coast, looking for the truth behind the reputation for violence. In Liberia he meets the LURD rebels who control most of the country, encountering soldiers as young as 10 and sinisterly marked roadblocks. His journey then takes him to Sierra Leone, a country that has a long history of warfare, but for the past three years has enjoyed a peace the populace are determined to maintain. Ben meets an amputee football team who are revered as national heroes, and spends a night on Banana Island, where the trees produce a steady supply of palm wine and cannabis.
